Alternate Reality

Alternate Reality was planned as a series of seven consecutive computer role playing games where players could create a character which they could transfer and develop through all seven scenarios. Sadly only the first two parts of this ambitious series were ever produced - The City and The Dungeon. Both games were released in the mid 1980s for the 8bit computers of the time with a series of conversions to the then new 16bit platforms such as the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST.

Alternate Reality - The City

The City introduced many interesting features when it was first released on the Atari 8bit. These included smooth scrolling graphics to represent the City streets, day and night, weather effects, a variety of music with taverns having different music. The graphics in the game utilised various Atari video tricks to maximise the number of colours on the screen and the music used all 4 of the Atari's sound channels. The game stores a lot of information about how you behave while playing which leads to characters treating you differently.

Alternate Reality - The Dungeon

The Dungeon introduced a whole new set of concepts to Alternate Reality including a set of Quests for the player to complete spread over four dungeon levels. It also introduced a variety of  unique treasures to discover and new locations.

The purpose of this project is to create a new version of AR that will run on modern computers easily and allow players to move easily between the two scenarios, possibly creating a framework which could allow some of the original concepts from the original plans to be implemented.
