Why attempt to remake Alternate Reality?

Firstly it's one of my all time favourite games and I kept coming back to the idea of recreating the game. I've been learning a lot along the way and although I'm not much of a programmer I now feel I'm fairly close to having the skills to get fairly close to a full remake.

Unfortunately the original series was never completed and a number of really good ideas in the original games were never fully implemented as a result.

There have been a number of proposed projects for remakes of Alternate Reality but to date there have been no substantial projects. Thanks to the great work that people like JIm Norris and Pascal Bringer have done, we now have a wealth of information about how the original games worked and the resources such as graphics and data.

My previous attempts...

I first attempted to recreate some of AR back in 2004 when I was using Mike Roberts TADS 3 system. TADS is designed to create Inteactive Fiction games (like the old Infocom classics - Zork, Lurking Horror etc).

I have since moved to SDL, then SDL with OpenGL for 3D graphics and finally SFML which I find very easy to use.

My plans...

Everyone has their own ideas about what they would like to see in a remake of a classic or favourite computer game. This is a bit of a problem. It's unlikley that my plans for recreating the game will meet with approval all round. Some people will think that my remake is too close to the original, others that it's not close enough! Hopefully some people will be interested and enjoy what I'm doing.

The AR project is being developed using Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express and the Simple and Fast Multimedia Library (SFML).
